Is the New York Times the new National Enquirer?
The Times, which last month mocked Sarah Palin for getting taken in by a French prank…got taken in by a French prank, printing a letter Monday allegedly from Bertrand Delanoe, the Mayor of Paris, calling Caroline Kennedy's bid for a U.S. Senate seat as "appalling" and "not very democratic." The Times explained in Tuesday’s edition: In Monday’s newspaper, we published a letter over the name of the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, criticizing Caroline Kennedy. This letter was a fraud and should not have been published. Mr. Delanoë’s office has since confirmed that he did not write it. Printing the letter, which also appeared on nytimes.com until it was removed, violated the standards and procedures of The New York Times editorial department. It is our practice to verify the authenticity of every letter we publish. Like most of our letters these days, this one arrived by e-mail. We sent an edited version back to the writer of the e-mail and did not receive a response. At that point, the letter should have been set aside. It was not. The Times has expressed its regret to Mr. Delanoë’s office for the lapse in judgment that led to this error. We now express those regrets to our readers. We will be reviewing our procedures in an attempt to ensure that an error like this is not repeated. The paper makes Libs shine so well doesn't it now? Kool Aid anyone?

- You may be on to something.
- No. Why so much hyperbole on the Right? 2pts.
- This dates from the 22nd of Decemeber. You should do a better job with your cut and pastes if you're going to accuse the NYTimes of being a rag. Such a job wouldn't cut it at the National Enquirer.
- No ... I believe the National Enquirer actually tries to find SOME facts. The beautiful thing is that the NY Times is going down the same self-destructive path as Liberal hate-radio (off-Air America) and the biggest failure in cable news history (MSNBC.)
- The NYT's has always been a liberal rag that only attacks Republicans and praise the do nothing liberals
- No. The Reichtwingers just loathe it so because it prints the truth. Ugly as it is. They made a mistake publishing a letter. Oh God Help Us All. At least they ADMITTED the mistake and have apologized for it - something you will NEVER EVER EVER see on Fox. As a matter of fact, if you're going to compare any media today to Enquirer, it would most definitely have to be Fox. After all, what other "news" outlet in the whole entire freaking WORLD went to court for the right to lie to the public? AND WON THE CASE??? “February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.” http://www.relfe.com/media_can_legally_lie.html
- That would be insulting the National Enquirer. I think they are the new Al Jazeera.
- It's always been that way.
- A retraction? Wow never heard of that. ::eyeroll:: Get over yourself. Just because you don't like the paper, doesn't discredit it. All newspapers make mistakes from time to time. That article was bashing Caroline Kennedy, I would think you would be all for that.
- Mmmmm Kool aid. You know that as long as they apologize afterward, Democrats can do anything. The only correctness is Political Correctness. Sigh. The whole problem is that the New York Times is a business. That means they have to make money. That means they have to sell. That means they have to go off the deep end to get attention. That means truth and honesty get trod underfoot. Go NY Times! Way to lower the bar even further! Be sure not to make a mockery yourselves or anything like that.
- They are in the same leage as the Washington Post which printed about Obama: "The sun glinted off his chiseled pectorals sculpted during four weightlifting sessions each week, and a body toned by regular treadmill runs and basketball games."
