employment question. illegal? ethical?

I work for a company that contracts to the government. Our contract was coming to an end and the bidding process was open. A new company won the contract. My company wanted to appeal the decision and protest. They asked us to stay "loyal" to them for 3 days with pay and not to sign with the new company. When asked what would happen if we signed and if they won back the contract...they said that those who stayed loyal would be brought back first. Is this legal? Can they blackmail us with our jobs?

  1. its hardly blackmail if they are prepared to pay your wages. i would say they have broken no law.
  2. Unless you have a contract or company policy that deals with these issues , I think they can reward and punish as they see fit.
  3. Whoever has the money(specially), & buy assets has the power to manage things as they see fit. Now a days anything is possible. Usually the concept is that you focus on the customers needs and wants. To bad this philosophy is not gonna get you anywhere. What a pity.
  4. no laws have been broken...its ethical....
  5. Doesn't sound like blackmail to me, and it does sound legal. After all, who else would they bring back first? I can't imagine any state labor laws that require a firm to re-hire anyone who has resigned.
