Why did oil companies from the US and Britian get exclusive oil contracts in Iraq?

If the Iraq war had NOTHING to do about securing oil supplies, why wasn't the bidding process opened up for all the major oil companies around the world? Pemex (Mexico) and Yukos (Russia) were among 40 others were completely shut out of the no-bid process in favor of US and British companies. Surprising? edit: Total (of France) is the smallest of the 6 major oil companies in the world. And Total is sharing their contract with Chevron of the USA.

  1. They didn't, France received one on the first and largest oil contracts and I think that is wrong. The countries that fought to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq should be rewarded by the Iraqi people that no longer live in fear. I strongly believe they are allowed to enter into contracts with any company and country they so choose though I think it would be a good jesture of thanks if they made sure first and foremost that was done with countries that sacraficed to bring peace and freedom to their country. Not a requirement though a choice by the Iraqi gov't. Please check your facts and correct them.
  2. Might Makes Right? .
  3. To the victors go the spoils. War profiteers
  4. The US and Britian right now are the reason why that country even has the oppurtunity to open up its oil fields to bidding. That is why the US oil companies are getting the bids.
  5. So, tell me, what did Mexico and Russia do to help make this possible???? About as much as Venezuela did.
  6. Do you mean Pemex, the GOVERNMENT OWNED oil company, and Yukos, the MAFIA/CONVICT OWNED oil company? The truth is, any private owned, full disclosure, oil company had a chance (with exceptions I'm sure). France had an oil company that did land a contract and had them before. Actually, that was why France was against the invasion because it jeopardized their puny dishonest oil company's contract by allowing free bidding. France was trying to monopolize the oil contracts in Iraq in my opinion. They also did some things they probably shouldn't have during the Oil for Food program. Did you forget? So let me understand your question. You think the world would be better off with a Yukos/Iraq contract because there would be full disclosure of profits? You don't think French oil companies were doing back door Hussain deals that made Saddam a billionaire? And, part of the war in Iraq was securing the oil to make sure no Government owned or Mafia owned oil company would use the profits to cause more worldwide and/or Iraqi suffering. And finally, if you think US and British companies have monopolized oil, don't you know foreigners are allowed to purchase stock and own a piece of any publicly traded company(sanctions and embargoes aside)? That means that an Iraqi could, and many actually do, own a piece of Exxon, and vote as a shareholder? I know an Iraqi and his portfolio is huge. He probably owns tons of Exxon(I don't pry).

  8. No oil company has gotten any contract in Iraq yet.
