Do I need an Federal EIN number if I operate my business as a sole proprietorship?

My business is a contracting pressure washing business with no employees other than my self. Thanks so much!!

  1. You can use your social security number if you are a sole proprietor. You don't need to obtain a Federal EIN number. I'm a sole proprietor too. Here is a direct quote from the IRS web site. A sole proprietorship that has no employees and files no excise or pension tax returns and a LLC with a single owner (where the owner will not be filing employment tax returns) are the only businesses that do not need an employer identification number. In these instances, the sole proprietor uses his or her social security number as the taxpayer identification number.
  2. You just need your personal social security number for a sole proprietorship business. Unless, you're a corporation, you don't need a Federal EIN number.
