Is the lack of public outrage in our country a sign of the decline of democracy ?

Where has the voice of the people gone? If noone protests wars WE start, no bid contracts and war profiteering, the loss of the middle class, global warming, filthy air or massive federal debt that is set to destroy us financially, does that mean: a) noone cares as long as they have a 6 pack and the remote control? b) its really true as one newsrite told me on a cross country flight, "the reason, you ask, why noone wrote about the savings and loan scandal is, americans are too stupid to understand anything above a sound bite." c) there are no real issues of abuse or neglect of power. d) the talking heads of the big 3 news stations report the same 5 stories because only 5 stories exist? e) the masses can't find ways to be heard? f) anyone who speaks up is ostracized? Can it be noone cares?

  1. Maybe you need to change your news source.
  2. You do know unemployment is at 4.5% right? It could be people got a job and are working now so there is nothing to be angry about. The excellent economy and leadership of the country has given people A LIFE!! I suggest you get a life.
  3. You seem to be a liberal with no sense of direction. That or a conservative that watches too much TV. The loss of the middle class is typically a conservative concern while global warming is a liberal one. I would suggest for a dose of reality to listen to michael savage on the radio. He speaks to the masses and provides truth. He is a conservative but (level headed) liberals and conservatives both enjoy the radio show as he is not subjugated to speak about something as the TV news and newspapers are. He is a free mind and will tell it like it is. His website is michaelsavage.com and you can check him out.
  4. i'm sure you don't miss a meal
  5. who has time to protest when you have to work to support your family. The government has so much power that the only way to change the course of things is to vote and I would suggest voting for a third party because the two parties that we have now have really become one, all of the arguing that they do is just for show, you can beleive that.
  6. There don't HAVE to be protests for Democracy to work. They can be used as a tool if necessary, but did it occur to you that there may be times that they aren't needed? We own screwdrivers, in case we need them, but do we use them everyday? Of course not, but it can be invaluable for the times its use is necessary. And, there are protests going on, maybe you just haven't heard about them. Go to D.C. - there's always someone across the street from the Whitehouse protesting something. The amnesty marches were last week. There are small protests all over from time to time about the war - there have even been some at soldiers' funerals. Protests have become so commonplace that not all of them are reported, unless they turn violent or are on a large scale. And, some people voice their opinions when they vote, write letters, work on campaigns, etc. There are ways to contribute to changes without marching with a placard. Public Assembly is not the only tool we have.
  7. The voice of the people went the way of mindless entertainment television, narrow-mindedness, and apathy. As an older American, having lived happily through the best years of this country ... It would be fun to watch today's unquestioning masses begin to rot in the future they are creating for themselves ... except that I have grandchildren who are anything but narrow-minded and apathetic and they have to live here too. ... I'm far from being an energetic dynamo, but that's why in my limited ways, I try to do some things to make their futures brighter. Maybe the best any of us can do is to open our eyes and be truly aware of what is happening around us and to let our voices (and votes) be heard ... loudly if necessary. 8. what??
  9. Ok, take the number of legal citizens in this county and figure out what percent voted in the last major election. Answer your question?
  10. i would say e. people that do speak up end up in jail or beaten up and in this day in age they can put your court date off for years i bet that shut alot of people up. there is no such thing as freedom of speach anymore. everything is so politically correct i could scream. the politicians are more interested in making money than being honest about their plans for our country and doing the job that they said they'd do. they'll say we'll do this and we'll do that but none of them get in and actually do what they promised. who ever knows about a protest going on. you can't even have an anti bush sign and stand on the side of the road quietly and peacefully withough being arrested. i get beat up by the cops enough i don't need to go to jail for who knows how long over a differance of opinion. How many times have they found something wrong with the bush administration and all clinton did was get some head in the white house. He wasn't selling to the enemy (haliburton just stopped selling to iran) and you can't tell me chaney didn't tell them how to do it, they made the intel work for them so that they could have a war as opposed to using the intel to see if we even needed to have one, almost everyone in his cabinet even gonzolas have been under one lawsuite or another. as a matter of fact the only person that i haven't heard anything bad about that bush has had his hands on is roberts. yeah one good one out of the bunch. and how many senators have tried to have him impeached by now bu tthen you never hear about it again. they got so tired of trying to impeach bush now they're after chaney. if the senators can't do anything and they're supposed to be our representatives. Who's left to hear us. the dust and the wind.
  11. The MUTING of public outrage is a sign of the decline of our "democracy".
  12. We have a democracy. Bush was RE-ELECTED!!!! You have a minority viewpoint. a. If things were bad people would care, things are good and they are not complaining. b. The "savings and loan" scandal was 1981. It is not a current press story. Adults know that it dominated the press for years. It passed. We don't talk too much in the current press about the war of 1812 either get used to it. c. Abuse of power. The Supreme Court would deal with it. Accusations of abuse, if real would have reached the court. NONE HAVE. d. We have more accessable press now in the US due to the internet than at any time in world history. Only a tiny minority fall off the deep end and demand "outrage". e. The masses and even the idiot fringe of the masses are getting heard like never before. We have more press, blogs, movies, alternate newspapers etc than ever before in history. f. WHERE ARE YOU? In many parts of this country you are more likely to be ostracized for showing support for Bush than opposing his policies. Half of the congress is "speaking out". Sure Bush may be currently unpopular, and his poll numbers may be below 50% but the anger is only comeing from a tiny fringe.
