Employment question. Ethical? Illegal?
I work for a company that contracts to the government. Our contract was coming to an end and the bidding process was open. A new company won the contract. My company wanted to appeal the decision and protest. They asked us to stay "loyal" to them for 3 days with pay and not to sign with the new company. When asked what would happen if we signed and if they won back the contract...they said that those who stayed loyal would be brought back first. Is this legal? Can they blackmail us with our jobs?

- It is your choice to leave or stay.
- Yepper, they sure can. It call "at will" employment. If you leave their is nothing requiring them to hire you back. Although having a knowledgable-trained employee virsa a new hire would lead to a possible offer. They asked you to stay in order to show they have the staff to do the job. NOW ASK THIS: If you stay do you miss out on a job with the other company, which has won the contract?
