Can I stay in or near Los Angeles for cheap?

I have a good feeling that I may have the career opportunity to participate in a professional music workshop in Los Angeles for 4 weeks come July this year. I can't pass this up, but the problem is that I live in NJ and I work a 9 to 5. Although the 9 to 5 is a contracting job, not permanent. I don't know anyone off hand in Los Angeles or the Orange County area that I could stay with. I would fly out there, and take public transportation to and from the workshop everyday. I'm wondering if anyone might have any ideas of what type of temporary living options are there to live in LA for 4 weeks, for as cheap as possible? Just have to eat, sleep, and stay safe. And by the way, I'm not rich by any means, so if anyone might know of any type of public or federal stipend I might be able to apply for something like this, it would be a HUGE help!!!!! Thanks for your answers

  1. If you find out let me know i would love to move back to the torrance area...where i grew up
  2. Here are some suggestions for you: 1) Scope out the location of the workshop and determine whether there are any churches nearby. If it is your denomination, that's even better. Write a letter or send an email explaining your situation and stating that you are looking for either a house sitting or room to let for a one month period. Be sure you have references. 2) Be sure to ask the workshop. I am certain this comes up. Others who are in from out of town might be eager to go in on some "corporate housing" type apartment. 3) Contact any local colleges or universities and see if there might be dorm rental space available for one month. 4) check out tosublet.com 5) research house sitting opportunities at housecarers.com Hope these ideas help.
  3. How about a hostel? Certainly not the most glamorous way to stay, but it's a bed, and that sounds like what you need. There are a number of hostels, including Hollywood Hostel at http://www.hollywoodhostels.com/. Reates as low as $17 per night.
  4. Hostels are a good bed, also consider the YMCA/YWCA, some of them still rents rooms.
  5. check out this forum, has different forums for all of California....I'm sure you can post a question if you don't find the information you need. http://www.city-data.com/forum/california/ good luck!
