How long can a hiring agency keep you working as a contractor on a permanent job position?

I have been a contractor for over a year for a big company. I get my paycheck from an agency. Are there any legal limits on how long they can keep me in a permanent position or am I doomed to be a contractor forever? I have no benefits, no healthcare, no paid holidays. If there are laws in place, are they state or federal laws?

  1. You need to check your contract, and your employer needs to check their contract as well and there should be a time frame in there. Mine was 6 months and the employer hired me full time, it was so much better than being a contractor! Good Luck.
  2. Every contract between an agency and the employer is structured a little differently but in most cases, the company should have the option to hire you direct. You should ask the agency you are working for if the employer has the option to hire you directly. There are no laws that I am aware of regarding the maximum length of a contractors position.
