Is this fair of my employer?

Hi, I have been working at my current job for a year and a half, as a general assistant, in a local supermarket, I earn minimum wage. Approx 2 months ago a new manager arrived, however he is now making every member of staff clean the public toilets and staff toilets as we cannot afford a cleaner. However we have JUST signed a contract but it does not state anything about cleaning toilets... nor does it say anything about what I am actually supposed to do within my role. so I do not know what my rights are, I have looked at the government website however it just states that the employer should provide clean toilets for the staff, but does not say anything about if the staff should actually have to clean them. Please help me I do not know if I should speak up because, I feel that this is not right and its taking the piss! and plus i swear that cleaners are on much higher then minimum wage, so shouldnt I at least get paid a bit more? HELP!!!!

  1. I worked at a similar type job for 10 years and yes, it was common that we had to clean the employee restrooms but it was not mandatory, only a way to keep us busy when the store was not busy. As far as the public restrooms, they had the hired on cleaners/porter do that. As long as you have gloves, it is no big deal.
  2. If they were asking you to do something potentially dangerous then you'd have a case to refuse, but they're just asking you to clean toilets for goodness sake! No, it's not a pretty job, but someone has to do it, and they are within their right to ask you to do it.
  3. Seriously, you're going to complain about having to occassionally clean a toilet? Given the current economy, I'd be thankful I had a job if I were you. If the contract doesn't outline your assigned duties or prohibit certain duties, they can alter your job description and include these duties. You could certainly argue with your bosses about the pay, but of course they don't have to comply and give you a raise. If you think this is unfair and aren't happy, start looking for a new job.
  4. I believe since your a general assistant you are expected to peform whatever job is assigned to you-even if it's cleaning the toilets. In this economy I wouldn't complain much about having to clean the toilets as long as I'm not always the one stuck doing it. I would be grateful that I still had a job, others aren't so fortunate. By the way, I don't think there's a labor law against cleaning the toilets-somebody's gotta clean them.
