Those Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown. Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television. "I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said. Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off". "Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the language! Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push but a fact because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home. Because God is part of our culture. We will accept your beliefs and will not question why, all we ask is that you accept ours and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us. If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like " A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture but do not force it on others. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE". If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here, so accept the country YOU accepted. Pretty easy really, when you think about it. I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please. I am not australian I am actually English and live in London and I think this is how we should approach things here. You're comments are all very interesting. TY

- Sorry fell asleep on the second line well done I agree
- Your question is Sooooooo lonnnnggg..
- ty for the 2 points copy and paste "dork"
- I got this emailed to me last month.. My hats go off to the Aussies. Dont hold your breath our goverment wont do the same here..
- Ahem. I'm not sure what aboriginals would have to say about that.
- Totally agree!!!
- Wow, I wish Tony Blair had the kahoonahs to say that! So very well put too.
- It's a bit long and didn't read it all. I agree. I'm living in Switzerland it's still nice here, some of the immigrants would prefer to see it look like a dump. I'm English and I have to conform to live here, (sort of) so should everyone else, we don't go to another country because it is like home.
- completely agree! 100% No chance of our government following suit!
- (from the uk) I agree in principal - the rule of goverment before the rule of religion - but I have a problem with any religion being taught in the schools - that's what the churches/mosques/whatever are for.
- Fair play to that man.. I couldn't agree more! I think this question has crashed the system... I can't get past 'preview!'
- Well what can i say, theres a job for them here in Downing street any time they wish. They would have at least 70% of this country behind them.If only we had a government here that was willing to stand up and speak out for the people of this land and not pamber to the wishes of people who want to be here but still support there own countries. You came here for a better life because your own countries knackered. As he said in his speech If you dont like our ways and ideals then go home and support your nation from there,we will not miss you,we never asked you to come here..
- I agree as well. If you move to a country then you must accept the counrtys way of life, otherwise you can leave.
- A country with guts. Thank god someone in the world has them. We bend over backwards to not offend anyone, the illegals are good, and awards given by congress to muslim dudes that have said they want shira law in the US. Here, it will be up to the individual to stop the muslim madness. I dont think the govt will be either willing or capable of it. Individuals made this country, and we may once again have to fight on our own soil to keep it.
- i agree. it would be great if the USA could have the balls to do something like that.
- Goodness me I have read this statement word for word and I have to say I agree with everything. Speaking from UK myself, I am not religious in any way shape or form, Nor do I have a problem with it, or anybody that practices it. I feel very sad for your country(Aus) as well as mine and Im sure there are plenty of people who live in UK will agree that we feel we have become second class citizens in our own country.. Im sorry to offend I dont mean to but we are a soft touch when allowing people into our country.. I would say the same to anybody that wanted to push their religious beliefs here. Good on you for speaking out, you are very brave..
- First of all that question is too long, second of all i agree with 'GUM'S' comment, third of all i agree with your comment, and i wish the british government had the balls to do the same.
- Indeedy. When in Rome, do as the Romans.
- Didn't they all riot and protest and call for his resignation or his death? How dare the Aussies say anything that might offend the muslims? They need to immediately issue an apology or face the wrath of allah.
- Sounds fair to me.
- Damn straight, mate! I wish the Bush administration had the same balls! Look everybody, Jihad and Crusade are just two different ways of saying the same thing. It's like calling a mountain lion a catamount, or a violin a fiddle. Bush says we're not at war with radical islam. Why the hell not? They're at war with us! Whether we want it or not--I do not, for the record--we are in a religious war. The Western Hemisphere, Western Europe and Oceana must remain secular!
- In the same way that I frown on Brits who move to Spain and refuse to adapt to the Spanish lifestyle / Language I say good on the Aussies. I would be more than willing to live there BY THEIR RULES to make up for anyone who decides to leave.
- Your question is long, and unlike others I read it all, but was unable to understand what it is that you are asking, or the point you are trying to make. Sorry.
- Oh abso-bloody-lutely If I wanted to make a new life for myself in a new state I would expect to adapt to and respect their cultures and beliefs. I'll be moving to Majorca soon - I am learning Spanish and the islands customs and history in order to understand and integrate. I wouldn't want it any other way
- So why don't the Aboriginies have the same policies and kick out the Britain's rejects who stole their land? In fact, why not ask the native Americans in north and south America apply the same policies there as well. It may solve a lot of problems.
- I agree 100% if i went to live in say Spain i would abide by their rules as i would in any country, I'm absolutely sick and tired of these people who come to our country and whinge and moan about it if it's so bad why do they come here wouldn't be anything to do with the way they bleed our social security system dry by any chance !
- I SAY AMEN!!!!!! I'm so sick of everybody kowtowing to radical bullies of every stripe. I wish our American leaders would grow a pair and say you have taken advantage of our freedom to criticize the government (try doing that in a country that demands Islamic law) so if you hate it that much go to your paradise on earth. Of course, you need to be sure you agree with their brand of Islam or your so called peaceful coreligionists will kill you in a split second.
- Your question raises too many points to respond to, the most notable in my opinion is the assumption that Muslims who live under Sharia law are most likely to become terrorists. This is clearly not the case when you look at the 7/7 suspects, Richard Reid the shoe bomber, the 9/11 offenders and all the more recent stuff on the news. None of these muslims live under the strict laws of Sharia and yet they still commited acts of terrorism. I'm no expert but I can't really see why Australia would be a target anyway.
- I hope everyone reads your question! How brilliant is that? This is what we should have here in the UK. The Government have no back bone and we are generally sick of being told we can't deport this man, we have to allow this parade, etc, etc. Why is it Muslims all over they world who seem to be causing this unrest? Why are unwilling to accept people have diffrent views and don't belive that Islam is right for them? I'm going to cut and paste this into an email and send it to everyone i know. My best friend is Indian, i am not racist, i even have Muslim friends who agree with my point of view, God bless Australia.
- Personally I don't believe anyone in this country should have the right to vote unless he is a British citizen. I don't believe people should be left with a dual nationality either. I believe anyone not agreeing with our laws should not be allowed to live here. I think the man who threatened the life of our Home Minister should be charged. All this I believe, but Blair will not recognise my existence. I was only born here. Served my country here. Paid my taxes here Paid 46 years into State Insurance. Never committed a crime. Sorry I forgot to say who I was. I am English, a cockney born and bred in London. And no I didn't leave during the bombing of London. If we carry on like this we can only end up in trouble as a country. And I do mean trouble.
- i think immigrants should follow the code of the country they are living in and learn the language of that country,i find that a lot of immigrants can speak perfect english but use there own language when talking to each other to make sure we dont know what they are talking about, i say when in rome do what the romans do
- Oh I lave the Australians they are so straight to the point and in this case so right! Neither Blair or Cameron or any other British politician has the guts to say this. It is, however, what the majority of British people think. They are welcome to worship in their own way without interference, but that does not give them the right to dictate to the indigenous population how they should worship. The trendy "human rights" lobby don't care if Christians are murdered and churches attacked but what they need to remember is that they are also putting at risk all religions - Hindu, Sikh, you name it they will all be made to suffer. How is it that every one of the main people calling for the destruction of this country and it's way of life are very happy to live of the backs of the British tax payer all of them appear to be on state benefits. If they don't like us they shouldn't accept our money!
- Damn right! Exactly what is needed back in Dear Old Blighty.
- ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
- I like Australia and It's a pity the UK does not follow suit. The Australians had the right idea when they threatened to blow a boat out of the water if it came any closer which was carrying illegal immigrants.
- Although I agree with the principle that immigrants to any country should respect that country's culture etc, BUT the whole thing stinks of utter arrogance. These guys stole their land from the aboriginal people. Most of the native English speakers are descendants of criminals. They have their "own language" since when? And I, as a non Christian do not see any reason the state should be involved with religion in any way, shape or form, anywhere in the world, whatever religion.
- Yes...I agree. Unfortunately I do not see that happening here
- I agree
- I totally agree with what Australia has said.I think its only fair.If we are attracted to a country, and want to live there, we have to live their way of life etc, or, you just don't go there.I'm not very political, or very involved in this field, but I think theres too much of a laid back attitude in Britain. The beauty of each country is it having its own identity.
- Good on you to bring up this subject which affects people in the UK to..No one has the guts to put them in their place in my country. If they love their religion and place of birth what the hell are they doin all around the world, bugger off back to your own,as we are sick to death of their ungratefulness, after they arrive in your country.I thank God there no bloody mosque near were i live, other i will go and live in their country and open up a Bingo hall. open air concerts, disrespecting their country as many are doin to us...Don't forget our Benefits are attracting many lunatics, from all over..We are to soft and afraid to say and lay down the law of the land..Myself i think we need to close our borders, and stop this invasion of most that don't even learn or want to learn our way of life, after all its our birthplace..It's such a shame, them that are born here have the same attitude as their forefathers. Ship them out.We have a weak government who are afraid to upset them.Beats me, i know what i would do.
