I can't believe this word is actually being taken seriously within the United States. Do people really think something like this could happen just because they are no longer getting their way? Look - if any CITIZEN really thinks their state can simply secede from the USA they need to wake up. Let's start a list of what they would lose. All federal funding would cease. This means no more payments from Uncle Sam for highways, education systems, lands etc. The US Mail system would no longer be able to operate in your little country. All Post Offices would close and you would have to figure out how to deliver your mail. Any incoming mail would be subject to foreign delivery charges and you would have to figure out how any mail leaving your little country will be handled as you are now out of the USPS system. Any company that is registered within your state would have to decide if they want to continue to do business as an United States corporation. Realistically, they would all leave your state. Otherwise, they are subject to customs, tariffs, and every other loop that any foreign company who wishes to do business within the US has to jump through. Any airline with headquarters in your state would have to leave unless they want to be considered a foreign carrier, and thus follow the restriction imposed by the FAA regarding this issue. Any and all military bases would be subject to closing as it is now considered non-US soil. Any protection of your lands by the US Military would be subject to treaties. All your banks would have to decide if they want to be a foreign bank or a US one. Foreign banks will be subject to regulation just like all the other countries. You lose things like the FAA, NASA, FTC, CDC, even your National Guard loses it's Federal Funding. Any company within your boundaries would be considered a foreign business and all contracts with any of these, including all Government and Military contracts, would be subject to review and possibly cancelled. What are you going to use for currency? As you decided to leave the United States then you would have to create your own currency and the value against the US dollar or Euro would be decided on the world market depending on your status and income level. As every corporation will leave your new little country then your new currency would have no financial backing. All incoming materials would be considered foreign sales, all outgoing shipping from your new little country would be subject to the same restrictions that Canada and Mexico receives. Do you collect social security or plan on collecting it? As you are now no longer American citizens this may be affected. Even simple things like your police force receives federal funding. This would all end. Your colleges too. Medical facilities? Yep. Insurance companies may not cover you as you are now going to a hospital in a foreign land. That is, if you have any hospitals left open. Be realistic - your highways will shut down, all corporations will leave, you will have no banking system in place. You will turn into a third world country overnight.

While many of your points are valid, you fail to comprehend one little thing; the human spirit. If a state does secede, or tries to, then I am certain that those who represent the interests of the secessionist already are aware of the work ahead of them. Those who favor the movement are prepared for the hard times. Where you see problems, I see opportunity.

Hey, here's why I'm answering your question .... because of your Avatar (with a Santa hat) and you called yourself the "goodnerd." That just made my day because it's all so funny. I'm guessing that you have a great sense of humor. Anyway .... thanks for putting me in a better mood today! As for your question, I do understand all the loss, but it's just that the government is going too far now. You probably won't like my answer, but our founding fathers knew a corrupt government was possible one day and that's why they gave us our rights for this time. We CAN fight back ... we CAN overthrow the government!!! It wouldn't be easy by any means now that they are so strong, and are ruling just about every part of people's existence. However, there are people, and I'd say most would be conservative, that believe a state could function on it's own. The government would make it miserable for them, even going as far as not letting people from that state USE "America's planes." They would definitely try to ruin any state's chances of becoming self sufficient, but the bottom line is this .......... Our ancestors came here with the clothes on their backs and they made it and WE could do it AGAIN!!!!! By the way, I would LOVE for my state to secede! I've had enough of this corrupt government, growing and showing their deceitful ways by the day! The people who settles in the midwest for example, didn't need people from New York to tell them how to run their medical offices, or who to hire for police. They didn't need BIG BANKS to control what their communities did in their own banks... and they weren't considered "foreign banks." Who needs $$ from Uncle Sam to run our schools ... have you noticed how uneducated most of the kids are when they graduate now days. They probably can't even point to Iraq on a map! You seem to think that a seceded state would be "foreign." You are just confusing yourself with the strangling TIES that the government already has around practically every aspect of a person's welfare, and should a state secede, they will pull the noose tighter until all is cut off, just to make the people suffer and fail.
