I don't understand how you would win?

You submit your bid, when the time remaining for the auction runs out the person with the highest bid wins. Is there something i'm missing?

Correct, in most instances on eBay, you have to actually wait for the auction to expire and whoever has the highest bid at that time wins. But be aware that many experienced eBay bidders will wait til the last one minute of the auction to place their bids. This is referred to as "sniping." They place their bid as close to the end of the auction as possible, hoping that no one else has time to outbid them. (Some auctions are also set up with a "Buy It Now" option - if you take that option, the auction ends immediately and you win.)
